PlayStation Japan’s PS+ Free Play is starting 2018 off with a bang. A whopping 8 free play games are available this month for PS+ subscribers! Swipe aside whatever titles were waiting for you under the Christmas tree and get to downloading.
Disgaea 5 (PS4)
This over-the-top strategy RPG may look goofy on the outside, but don’t let that fool you. Fans of the series know that Disgaea is one of the deepest and most challenging SRPGs out there. New to the this time around is the revenge system where characters will power up when another ally dies in battle.
Expect easily over a hundred hours of gameplay if you’re looking to dive into everything the game has to offer. Several pieces of DLC are also available for those who want to take the game even further. Disgaea 5 alone could keep you occupied well into the summer, but wait! There’s more this month.
The Last Blade 2 (PS4/PS Vita)
The next free play game available for Japanese PS+ subscribers is 幕末浪漫第二幕 月華の剣士 ～月に咲く華、散りゆく花～ Bakumatsu Roman Dainimaku: Gekka no Kenshi – Tsuki ni Saku Hana, Chiri Yuku Hana (my fingers are already raw from typing that title out). Let’s just go with the English title of simply The Last Blade 2, a fighting game originally released in 1998 by SNK.
Back in the heyday of the 90s, fighting games were king and SNK contributed deeply to the genre with games like King of Fighters, The Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, and Fatal Fury. One of their lesser known series was The Last Blade. This remaster brings a fantastic fighting game to you in magnificent, near arcade-perfect glory. Featuring a colorful cast of characters, each with a very unique weapons-based fighting style, there’s a lot to master.
The Last Blade 2 introduced not only more characters but also gave players the choice between focusing on power or speed for the character they chose. This allows a more strategic approach to each bout and keeps the fighting system ocean trench levels of deep.
The last featured game on our list is the music-themed Aaero. Developed by indie team Mad Fellows, the gameplay is a mix of Tempest and Rez as you control a ship moving through a psychedelic tunnel. The electronic beats of the soundtrack are enhanced when your ship follows highlighted lines along the edges adding effects and flair to the background music.
It’s a tried and true combo that’s sure to appeal to electronic music fans and space shooter fans alike.
