Normally, if you asked me ‘do you want to go to a cat cafe’ my immediate reaction would probably have been ‘Nope’. However after some thought I realized a) I like cats (way more then dogs) and b) it’s probably gonna be extremely chill in there, so what’s not to like about that? Also I was going with Hiro, someone who utterly adores cats, so if I wasn’t feeling it I figured I could at least ride his enthusiasm.

Located just after the entrance to Takeshita-dori (probably one of Japan’s busiest streets) Mocha is hard to miss.  Its big sign features a grumpy looking cat sporting a classy monocle. Up one flight of stairs and suddenly your world goes from hectic city centre hustle and bustle to serene surrealness.

I feel serene-er already

The ambience of the entrance is similar to some kind of spa or relaxation retreat. I say that not really knowing what these places are like, but I imagine that if I were to ever visit one, it’d feel like this. Also the automated slipper dispenser was a nice touch.

Pictured: not the slipper dispenser

It only occurred to me after walking past the chandelier made of playing cards and the slightly odd Victorian decor that this place was themed around Alice in Wonderland. I’m not a huge fan but I got the gist.

The easiest way to make a decision about which room to start with? Go for the room with the most cats. After entering a bright and fairly spacious room with a wooden tree structure in the centre of it, there I was. In the heart of the cat cafe, surrounded by all kinds of fluffy little docile kitties. Cute.

Look how cute I am

Some kitties are more willing then others to be stroked, but overall they’re all pretty chill and aren’t phased by all the people coming and going. My only real tip would be to keep an eye on the time. Gawking at kitties seems to make you lose all sense of time and space. We only planned to stay for 30 mins but ended up being there for nearly an hour.

And thus concludes my first ever cat cafe experience. Would I go again? Sure, what’s not to enjoy a room full of pussy… cats.

Wait… did you just… never mind.
