Most gamers love Japan, but not every gamer can speak or understand Japanese. Whether you’re a foreigner living in Japan, or just a fan looking for imports, this series will give you the lowdown on the latest (and not so latest) releases in Japan and the English options available to them.

Green: Full English support (by default / optional / setting your console region / etc.)

Orange: Some English (voices / menus / subtitles / etc.)

Red: No English available (Japanese release only / no English support / etc.)

Octopath Traveler

I hate groups that walk like this.

Platforms: Switch

English Level: Green (English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian available via region settings)

Japanese Censorship: None

In the past, a game like Octopath Traveler wouldn’t ever see the light of day outside of Japan, much less be released will full English support, but here we are. What a time to be alive.

This beautiful turn-based role playing game developed by Square-Enix is a callback to the golden age of RPGs and features eight different character and archetypal fantasy game classes. The Japanese release supports multiple languages based on your console’s region settings, and to our knowledge, has not been censored.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

How can he even tell if they’re angry at him?

Platforms: Switch

English Level: Green (Full English support)

Japanese Censorship: Goomba gore and shyguy mauling has been re of course, None

Captain Toad is back after his debut on the Wii U in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for Nintendo Switch. The remaster includes updated graphics and the same addicting pick-up-and-play gameplay, but new features include levels based on Super Mario Odyssey.

It also features much appreciated two-player co-op multiplayer, which means only one thing— Captain Toad and chill. Know what we’re saying? Talking about date night, playa’. The Japanese release supports several languages, including English.

God of War

“Pose, boy!”

Platforms: PS4

English Level: Green (Full English support)

Japanese Censorship: None

If you’ve never picked up the absolute masterpiece that is God of War or you’ve been waiting for a price drop (imported games are notoriously expensive in Japan), you’re doing yourself a disservice. The recent new game+ update also makes it the perfect time to go back for another play-through of demon killing fatherhood simulator.

The Japanese release of God of War supports full English and comes completely uncensored which is unbelievable considering the content after games such as Resident Evil 7, Nioh, and Ninja Gaiden were heavily censored.
