We’re right smack in the middle of the dog days of summer. Luckily, the PlayStation Store is here for us with some PS Plus free games to help cool us down. Last month, we were focused on dancing the night away. This month, we’re heading in a whole new direction with some visual novel/JRPG hybrids and some platforming assassins.
There’s also a campaign happening. If you spend more than 5,000 yen on the store for one purchase, you’ll be entered into a lottery to receive a 5,000 yen coupon. Don’t miss out on that deal.
Assassin’s Creed: Chronicles (PS4)
The Chronicles series takes the traditional Assassin’s Creed gameplay and turns it into a 2.5D action platformer. The settings range from China, Russia, and India, so there’s plenty of variety in the locations. The entries in this side-series for the Assassin’s Creed franchise have received middling reviews, but you can’t complain too much about free. There’s definitely some decent exploration to be found in these titles, at the very least.
Dark Rose Valkyrie (PS4)
This JRPG comes courtesy of developer Compile Heart, who is probably best known for creating the Hyper Dimension Neptunia series. Dark Rose Valkyrie shakes things by including visual novel mechanics. You can interview other characters and look for the traitor among your ranks, reviewing their answers and searching for contradictions. It’s an interesting gameplay element that shakes up the more tried and true aspects of Dark Rose Valkyrie’s Japanese RPG trappings.
Also FREE this month:
- Spelunker HD (PS3)
- Death Under the Labyrinth (VITA)
Spelunker HD is a remake of a 1985 NES game. It also includes the original game as an unlcockable. Death Under the Labyrinth is yet another Compile Heart game. They sure are into releasing their games for free lately. The dungeon crawler they’re offering here is great for the on-the-go Vita.
