fbpx Japan's PS Plus Free Games June 2018

Sony Japan has released its new crop of PS Plus free games for June. There’s quite a healthy variety, and the PS3 is even holding on, albeit with a shogi game. Still, it’s a much better group of games than we’ve seen in previous months, so that’s always a good thing. June is the beginning of rainy season in Japan, so if you’re a PS Plus subscriber on a budget, this month will give you a good amount of entertainment during those days indoors.

XCom 2 (PS4)

XCOM 2 has been hailed by some as one of the best tactical role-playing games of the last few years. Featuring the ongoing war between humans and invading aliens as a storyline, the XCOM series is full of sci-fi schlock played up to great effect.

As mentioned, it’s also a fantastic tactics game with a long campaign that is sure to keep you invested. Although the PC version suffered some performance issues when it first launched, those have all been ironed out in the long run, and the PS4 version runs silky smooth.

SteamWorld Dig 2 (PS4 / PS Vita)

If you’re up for finding some buried treasure, then SteamWorld Dig 2 is your tickget. This sequel follows the same basic formula from the first, digging underground while avoiding enemies and environmental hazards. The treasure you find during your expeditions will allow you to make money and upgrade your digging gear.

It’s an addictive game that gets better the further you delve into it. It’s perfect for short bursts of play or longer marathon sessions. Pick your poison.

Nidhogg (PS4 / PS Vita)

Nidhogg is an incredibly simple game about two sword fighters trying to race to the opposite end of the screen. The visuals are intentionally crude, looking like something out of the Atari era. The gameplay though, is incredibly fun. It’s easy to see shades of Squaresoft’s Bushido Blade games for the in Nidhogg’s design.

One clean strike means death, but the defeated player will continually respawn until on has made it to the end of the stage and been eaten by the Norse god Nidhogr. What a treat for winning. A sequel was just released last year, but if you want to see where it all started (and for free) then this is your ticket.

Also FREE this month

  • The Strongest Shogi Fierce Finger 13 (PS3)
  • Psycho-Pass: Mandatory Happiness (PS Vita)

Just look at the translation of that shogi game and tell me you don’t want to download it. Also, an interesting aside about Psycho-Pass, the title is actually the Japanese pronunciation of the word “psychopath” in English. Japanese doesn’t have a “th” sound, so it ends up just getting pronounced as “ss.” I’m not sure if this was a mistake on the creator’s end or a deliberate move, but either way, it’s an interesting little tidbit that nobody seems to mention when talking about that series.
