When we were invited down to film Japan’s 2016 Aqua board champion, Wataru Shimazaki, I wasn’t entirely sure how exactly we’d be able to film him. Armed only with a few GoPros and a Sony A7 with a long lens our choices were a little limited. As it turned out the best way to get any decent footage was for me to ride on the back of the jetski powering the Jetdeck (the model of water propelled board device Wataru was riding). All while it tightly circled around Wataru doing his thing. Easy, right?

What could possibly go wrong?

At this point its worth noting that a) I’m not a huge fan of the ocean and b) I’ve never ridden on jetski before. So after a short cruise out past the jetty the jetski started to rev up.  Wataru emerged from the water just like Tony Stark’s Iron man suite. Before I really had a chance to take in the sheer awesomeness of the situation I remembered I had to film. Soon we start donuting around Wataru in tight circles, I hit record and hoped for the best. ‘Just keep the kid in your sights and try not to fall off’ I remember repeating to myself as I clung on for dear life to the only tiny thin strap available.

I also lost those sunglasses.

And if that wasn’t making life hard enough I’d say a good 50% of the time I was getting sprayed in the face by Wataru’s two jets cannons firing out water. After about 5 minutes of backflip after backflip I was getting fatigued. I lost my balance ended up flipping off the jetski (which you can see at 0:00 in Simon & Martina’s full edit).

I even got a chance to have a go at the jet deck myself. I’m not gonna lie. I loved it. I’m petrified of being in the water but hovering 10 meters above it I was completely fine with. So after a few goes I got a little comfortable with the balance and decided the next logical step would be to try a backflip. Obviously it went terribly wrong and I ended up smashing my nuts straight into the ocean, twice. Martina did a fantastic job in capturing the moment when my balls met the ocean at a horrific speed. Needless to say it was an unforgettable day and if given the opportunity again I’d definitely give it another shot. Only this time I’d bring a cup. For my balls.
