Tucked away in the tiny town of Awa, Chiba, just across the bay from Tokyo, is the entrance to Hell. Well, not really. But you can take a peek into Hell from the top of Nokogiri Mountain., a vertical drop straight down the side of the mountain!
I don’t know why this place isn’t more well known! I hadn’t even heard of it until my sister suggested we go there while she’s in Japan visiting us. The views were hands down the best I’ve seen in Japan (well besides from the summit of Mt. Fuji, but that doesn’t count). And the hike through the mountain was SO PRETTY.

The paths were a combination of stairs, ramps and rock tunnels making it really enjoyable to hike. Apparently there are monkeys around but unfortunately, we weren’t lucky enough to find one. If you are looking for a break from the city, this makes a great day trip from Tokyo! Highly recommended! Just make sure to bring plenty of courage for that view into Hell.
