The Scottish synth-pop trio CHVRCHES has teamed up with Japanese electro-pop group Wednesday Campanella and released a new singled titled “Out of my Head.” The new single also has an accompanying music video, directed by Junichi Yamamoto.
The psychadelic, space-age visuals come courtesy of the same man who has directed the crazy Pop Team Epic television anime. He was also involved in the hugely popular 2016 hit anime film Kimi no Na wa. (English title: Your Name.) as well as Batman Ninja.
In a press release, CHVRCHES lead singer, Lauren Mayberry, stated, “Japan has always been a really special place for CHVRCHES. And we were really excited to put together something special for our fans there.”
Wednesday Campanella singer KOM_I said the collaboration was like, “Kawasaki meets Glasgow, Kiyoshiro Imawano meets David Bowie, and edamame meets fish & chips.”
Wednesday Campanella released their second full-length album, Superman, in 2017, and recently put out a new single title “Galapagos” on June 27th. CHVRCHES just released their third full-length, Love is Dead, earlier this year, so the collaboration for the new single came together quickly for both bands.
Collaborations between the east and west seem to be becoming more commonplace nowadays, Spiff TV and foreigner-run Japanese animation studio D’art Shtajio collaborated on a music video project earlier this year as well.
And of course, who could forget one of the most famous collaboration between a Japanese artist and Western pop group? Daft Punk’s Intastellar 5555.
