Last week, Mouse on the Keys released their first single from the upcoming album Tres, due for release on 23rd of May. The single titled “Time” features guitarist, Mario Camarena from the happy vibes math rock band “Chon”.
This connection formed when Chon did a Japanese tour in October 2017 playing a sold out show with Mouse on the Keys in Shibuya. The successful pairing on the dual headlining show proved that these two bands could potentially work together more and recording started.
Mouse on the Keys and Chon together
It’s not rare for Mouse on the Keys to write songs with sounds other than those produced from their keyboards. Many feature trumpet or saxophone, such as “seiren” or “reflexion”, however, as this is the first time to hear guitar in the mix it’s created a little bit of anticipation, waiting to hear if it would fit or not.
The guitar work is, in true Chon fashion, technically accomplished with lots of sweeping, fast-paced finger work interlaced with pretty chords giving it that warm happy tone. It’s something that isn’t really representative of Mouse on the Key’s often somber and ominous vibe, but here it works. While Mario takes centre stage, everyone carefully supports his sound while giving enough space for him to shine through.
The studio life
Interlaced into the main motif are a rhythmic offbeat progress of stabs. Drummer Akira Kawasaki lives up to his machine-like precision and speed with a sprinkling of interesting and creative drum fills. Look forward to the two bar killer at around 1 minute in. The solo piano work goes down the oh-so MOTK jazz-influenced route and is undoubtedly sublime.

It’s a relatively short song, especially for a progressive band. At just over 2 minutes, it avoids any standard song structure making it an interesting choice for a single. It gives you no real hint as to what direction they will take for the rest of the album. This is a good thing as it builds suspense and keeps you looking forward to what is to come.
This single is available on now on iTunes, Spotify, and Bandcamp.
