When Jun Seba, better known as Nujabes, passed on Feburary 26, 2010, the world lost one of the most innovative and passionate hip-hop producers of recent memory. For several years, those who worked closely with him have organized a memorial event around the anniversary of his death.
It’s a night to celebrate one man’s life and the legacy of music he left behind. This year “A Tribute to Nujabes” will take place at Vent near Omotesando Station Saturday, February 24. Advance tickets are still available for ¥3,500 and will cost ¥4,000 at the door.
The modal and metaphorical Nujabes
Throughout his short career, Nujabes released two incredible albums with another released after his passing. He collaborated with dozens of musicians in the underground hip-hop community, including Shing02, Cise Starr, Substantial, Uyama Hiroto, and Terry Callier just to name a few.
The smooth beats and jazz sensibilities of his music create a chilled, dreamlike atmosphere that still stands out in the hip-hop scene. His sound continues to influence musicians to this day. It would be easy to link to every song he ever created, but here are just two examples for those who’ve maybe never heard of him.

If you’re in the Tokyo area, head out to A Tribute of Nujabes and join the celebration. You’ll definitely be experiencing a soulful display of music and a touching memorial to Jun Seba’s musical genius.
