Two new animated seasons of Ghost in the Shell were recently revealed by Production I.G. USA president, Maki Terashima-Furuta. In an interview with YouTube channel “Nuke the Fridge” at San Diego Comic Con, Terashima-Furuta informed that the franchise would be receiving two new 12-episode seasons.

While the release dates for these new seasons have not yet been announced, the president also let it be known that one of the seasons will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama, who previously wrote and directed 2002’s Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, a 26-episode anime series. Kamiyama also wrote and directed that series’ sequel season, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG, in 2004.

The other season of the new Ghost in the Shell anime will be directed by Shinji Aramaki, probably best known for directing the 2004 film Appleseed. He was also recently involved in the short film prequel to Blade Runner 2049, titled Blade Runner: Black Out 2022, as a mechanical designer. You can watch the full short on YouTube here.

Motoko Kusanagi in the manga

Ghost in the Shell started as a manga in 1989 by artist and writer Masamune Shirow. Since then, the series has grown into a multimedia franchise that includes animated films, TV shows, video games, as well as a 2017 live-action film starring Scarlett Johansson. That film’s special premiere event was held in Tokyo in November 2016.

The biggest hits in the franchise include the 1995 film directed by Mamoru Oshii and the aforementioned two-season animated television series, Stand Alone Complex. The manga series and the original film have had a huge impact on the science fiction genre, inspiring many films and television series, most famously The Matrix trilogy.

Fans have been clamoring for a continuation of the Stand Alone Complex seasons for quite some time. With Kenji Kamiyama back in the director’s chair — for at least one season — those hopes may soon be answered.
