XOGenaSYS is based on the comic created by Johnny O’Brient, illustrated by Nikolas Draper-Ivey, and written by Tre McIntosh. The story follows Darius Smith, who grew up in the streets and has a talent for fighting. This gets him drafted into the sport of XOGenaSYS where combatants use powerful exo-suits to battle each other in gladiator-style combat.
The pilot episode that is set to premiere at Anime Expo will act as a prequel to the manga, looking at the life of Darius Smith before he gets recruited into the world of XOGenaSYS. The episode is directed by Arthell Isom of D’art Shtajio.
Check out the pilot episode of XOGenaSYS on July 7th.
If the story of XOGenaSYS sounds interesting, you can read the first four chapters of the comic on Noir Caesar, a site founded by O’Brient which features works from up-and-coming creators. As of this writing, 11 titles are available through the site.
Last summer, D’art Shtajio worked on a pilot for another independent comic called Indigo Ignited. The 8-minute short can be seen on YouTube. They’ve also created a music video for “Thinkin” from Spiff TV, produced the first part of their own animated short, “The Doll,” and have done key animation for several anime including Tokyo Ghoul:re and others. You can find the full list of their own works on their website.
Anime Expo is “the largest celebration of Japanese pop culture in North America.” This year the event will be held July 5th-8th at Los Angeles Convention Center with special pre-event show on July 4th. The premiere episode for XOGenaSYS will be shown in Room: LACC / Live Programming 4 (411). Check out the Anime Expo schedule for more information.
